How to Make Your Own Cannabis Vape Oil

I personally consider vape oil pens to be the future of cannabis vaporization. They are inexpensive, discreet, small and very easy to operate…some just require you to puff away! They consist of an oil cartridge and a pen-shaped battery. You can see some these here: Oil Pen Vaporizer (Button-less) or Oil Pen Vaporizer Variable Voltage.

However, the cannabis oil cartridges are found in dispensaries and are generally quite expensive and come in a very limited choice of strains and strengths. Fortunately, it is quite easy to make your own customized cartridges, saving yourself a ton of money in the process.

While the money saved is a great motivator, it is the ability to customize/personalize your vaporizer oil that is most significant. It is entirely possible to make cartridges that use your choice of cannabis strain in a strength that suits your needs to a tee. Many people, especially folks new to or returning to cannabis, are looking for something that won’t get them too high, too fast. Most of the commercial vape oils are very potent…not the sort of thing you could puff away on over an evening or get a mild little buzz before going out to see a movie. Since you control the amount of dilution, you can create ‘vape oil light’. You could even make oils of different strengths for different occasions!

To make your own vape oil, you will need to find a cannabis concentrate such as ‘shatter’, ‘budder’, ‘cannabis rosin’ or ‘cannabis wax’. This might be a bit tricky since even after the legalization of cannabis in Canada on 17 October 2018, the government has indicated that concentrate (and edibles) will not be available to the public until a year after dry herb is made available. For those of you like myself with your ACMPR license (Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations) are legally allowed to make cannabis oil provided no organic solvents are used. While Soothing Vapours does not condone or recommend anything illegal, I do know of people who obtain their concentrate from any of the many online mail-order marijuana (MOM) stores. Again, sales made from these businesses ARE illegal under Canadian law.

Now, with your nice, legal cannabis concentrate in hand, you will need a wax liquidizer. Soothing Vapours recommends the official ‘Wax Liquidizer’ brand sold in our store. This product has consistently provided us with the best results in terms of stability, solubility and great flavour. There are many wax liquidizers available on the market but not all are of equal quality: go with the best.

The amount of liquidizer and the THC content of your original will determine the strength of your customized oil. If your concentrate is 90% THC and you mix 1 gram of concentrate with 2 millilitres of liquidizer: the result will be approx. 2.5 ml of 45% vape oil. Still stronger than what you might like? Use 3 ml of liquidizer to dissolve that gram of shatter…you will get approx. 3.5 ml of 30% oil. And, so on and so on…you can tailor the oil to fit your requirements. By now, some of you are thinking: what the hell? How does 1 gram of concentrate plus 2 millilitres of liquidizer equal 2.5 ml of finished product? Think of pouring a bucket of water into a bucket of sand…you don’t end up with an even 2 buckets of mix, right? Cannabis magic!!

The concentrate and the wax liquidizer so into a heat-safe shot glass. Fill a small pan of water and heat on your stove to nearly boiling. Place the shot-glass into the pan ensuring that the water level is no higher than half way up the shot glass…getting water in your oil is bad news! Stir continually until all of the concentrate is dissolved…any solids left in the oil will cause problems with your vape pen. Another method involves using a microwave: I don’t go that route because excessive heat is the enemy of cannabis and I don’t trust the heat control from microwaves. But that’s just me.

Use your needle-nosed bottle to slurp up the oil from the shot-glass and you are ready to start filling your ‘carts’ (cartridges).

That’s it…you are ready to vape your own cannabis oil for a fraction of what the manufactured carts cost!

Please note that everything you need for the production of your vape oil (with the exception of the concentrate, stove, pan or microwave!) are available from the Soothing Vapours store .

Happy vaping, my friends!
